This difference in carbon content affects weldability and sensitization. Sensitization, the formation of chromium carbides at grain boundaries during welding, can reduce corrosion resistance.

316 SS vs 316L SS Chemical Composition:

Both 316 and 316L stainless steel contain iron, chromium, and nickel, but their compositions differ slightly. The chromium content of 316 stainless steel ranges from 14% to 15%, while 316L stainless steel has 16% to 18%. Molybdenum content also differs significantly, with 316 steel containing 2% to 3% and 316L steel containing up to 0.03%. Nitrogen and carbon content also differ: 316 steel contains 0% to 0.08% carbon, while 316L steel can contain up to 0.03%.

316L stainless steel has a lower carbon content, known as "low-carbon L-steel," and offers greater strength and a lower risk of intergranular corrosion compared to the mechanically superior 316 steel. However, due to its limited heat resistance, neither 316 nor 316L stainless steel is suitable for use in extremely high temperatures.

Type 316L stainless steel can withstand temperatures up to 800℃, but its strength and corrosion resistance decrease above this temperature.

Type 316 stainless steel is better suited for high-temperature applications, such as turbine blades, exhaust systems, and process equipment. It is also well-suited for low-temperature applications, such as natural gas pipelines and valve components submerged in seawater.
